So you’ve gotten rid of all those lazy cells inside you and decided to shake it all off and go ahead with a fitter routine. The first step is the hardest, but the journey is far from over. If you’re new into the world of fitness, I’d recommend you seek the help of a trained professional who can help you reach your fitness goals.

The importance of working out with a trained professional may sound a little overwhelming if you are just beginning with the exercise routine. But your trainer can actually make or break your motivation. Even before you begin, let me tell you — there are going to be a lot of days when you won’t feel the urge to get out of your bed, when you want to take the easy way out, skip off your leg day or when you just feel like giving up on your goals. It is during that time that a good trainer will pull you up, make you confident about your strength, and keep you focused.

You may think you’re mentally strong enough to go through it all by yourself, but what about the techniques? The internet is a blessing and you may get to learn a whole lot of new exercises on YouTube, but what if you go wrong with even one step? It could be dangerous and low cost; you could actually end up seriously injuring yourself. That’s why I would advise you to work out only under the supervision of a trained professional.

If you’ve got another person taking keen interest in your goals, there is automatically a kind of accountability that sets in, the kind that helps you get more consistent results. But don’t get me wrong there — all these are true only for a “good” personal trainer. You’re going to work as a team with your trainer; so it’s important to ensure that you are choosing the right one.

A lot of people get content thinking that they are investing in an affordable trainer and Gym subscription that brings them closer to achieving their fitness goals. But I can’t stress this enough — you need to awaken your inner discerning eye and look straight through the tactics of persuasiveness when you go to meet trainers. Invest a little time in ensuring that you’re placing your fitness goals with a responsible trainer.

So what should you keep in mind while choosing a trainer?

First and foremost, shake off the notion that a trainer’s abilities are to be judged on the price that they are charging you for. While it may be one of the key factors that you should base your judgment on, it shouldn’t be the only one. I have worked in the this field long enough to tell you that even for me, the most important things are knowledge of the field, techniques and dedication.

How To Choose The Right Trainer

Try to gauge the trainer’s personality in your first meeting, how serious they are about fitness and if they really know what they are doing. There are tons of loonies out there who’ll put up a show in the first meeting, but when it comes to actually beginning with the exercise sessions, they won’t take you past the basics. At the top of my head, I’ve got six key rules for you to keep in mind while you are on the lookout for a good personal trainer.

  • Do not compromise on certification

There should not be any two ways about it — a good trainer will be able to show you certification that builds their credibility. Check if their certificate is from a reputed institute and also see their area of expertise. This way you’ll know the strengths that the trainer comes with, and help you determine whether they will actually align with your fitness goals.

  • See if they practice what they preach

It is easy to get your certification from any organization around, but how updated is the trainer with the correct techniques, terminologies and health in general? Also see the number of years that the trainer has worked for; experience helps to gauge which techniques work to get the best out of every workout.

  • They should make an effort to personalize their program for you

A good trainer understands that each person’s body, ability and potential is different; so the same strategy stencil can’t be cut for everyone. The best trainers will not rush you into directly jumping into exercising. They will first try to understand your body. It could be through a fitness test or even a sample workout session. Only after understanding what your body needs, will they chalk out a plan for you, which follows a certain balance. It shouldn’t be so easy that you smoothly get your way through it, or even so intense that you drain yourself completely in only a few days.

  • Understand their style of motivation

Your personal trainer is going to be your cheerleader, so understand how they work. What do they do to motivate you to ensure you go that little bit extra to get closer to achieving your potential? Do they yell their lungs out if you aren’t able to reach your goals or do they believe in a reward mechanism to get you pumped up? I’m not going to pick a side and say one technique is the best; but for some, only positive reinforcement works to get the best results. So before you delve in, make sure you are comfortable with their style.

  • Only go for a trainer who is absolutely passionate about their work

If you are going to need a little nudge to keep yourself motivated, you will need the help of someone who absolutely believes in the cause of fitness. Talk to your trainer and see what drives them. Only a trainer who is passionate will make sure they make your goals, their own.

  • A good instructor introduces you to the instructor within

Whether you are aware of it or not, there is a tiny fitness instructor inside your subconscious who knows what’s best for your body. A good instructor will put you in touch with your own self, your own fitness buddy to ensure you don’t lose motivation, discipline or focus.

My experience in the field of fitness tells me that exercise and working out is only 20% of the total effort that you require to put in, the rest is all about your mental strength. So, buck up and give yourself a little pep talk. For the times when you can’t do it yourself, trust your personal trainer to take you forward.
